What Is Root Canal Therapy?

A root canal is a procedure to repair an infected or heavily damaged tooth and restore it to proper function so that you can continue to use it normally and avoid additional damage or loss of the tooth. This procedure is extremely common and is often performed in cases where a cavity has been left untreated for an extended period of time or the tooth has suffered a significant trauma that has left the nerves inside dying or dead.

During a root canal procedure, your dentist will gently clean out what’s called the pulp on the inside of your affected tooth. The pulp is the soft tissues like nerves that live underneath the hard outer shell of enamel and bone and are vulnerable to infection when exposed or injured. Once the pulp has been removed, the dentist will further sanitize the inside of the tooth, before packing it with a filler material and sealing the tooth back up with a crown or a filling.

The goal of the root canal is to preserve your natural tooth structure while eliminating any infection. After your root canal procedure is complete, you should be able to use your tooth normally.

When Do I Need Root Canal Therapy?

We suggest scheduling a dental exam any time you are experiencing pain or discomfort in one or more of your teeth. This will give your dentist the opportunity to reconnoiter the situation and determine what treatment, including a root canal, may be appropriate to get you feeling better. If you do need a root canal, we may be able to fit you in during the same day as your initial appointment, or you may need to schedule another visit.

What Are the Benefits of Root Canal Therapy?

A root canal can have a significant impact on your overall dental health by both improving your ability to use your teeth normally and preventing further damage and decay.
