What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are artificial replacement teeth that can be used to fill in holes in your smile caused by teeth that you have lost over the years. Losing teeth is extremely common — most people lose teeth over the course of their lives — and while it affects everyone differently, for many people it can be upsetting, frustrating, and interfere with their quality of life.

That’s where dental implants come in. Using implants, we can replace the teeth you’ve lost with sturdy, effective new ones that give you back your ability to flash a smile without worrying about how it looks. You’ll even be able to bite and chew more naturally again! The dental implant process takes time — often at least six months — but the results tend to be excellent.

Dental implants are made up of several parts — primarily a titanium screw called a post (the actual implant) and a porcelain crown that goes on top (the replacement tooth). The post is essentially an artificial tooth root and is gently inserted into your jaw in order to provide a foundation for the crown on top. The post can last for a lifetime with proper care, while the crown typically lasts for a decade or more.

Who Might Need Dental Implants?

Dental implants are game-changers for anyone who is tired of living with missing teeth. Unlike old-fashioned options like traditional dentures, implants topped with crowns can actually restore both the appearance and much of the function of having a real, live tooth, and are the best tooth replacement available to dentists today. For a more affordable choice, however, dental implants can also be combined with dentures to provide a firmer, more reliable fit that significantly outperforms standard dentures.

Single Implants

Implant Surgery

Single implants (also called single-tooth implants) are the basic type of dental implant. Each single implant consists of one titanium post that is placed in your jawbone and then topped with a porcelain crown. Single implants provide a high-quality, long-lasting replacement for a single missing tooth and are a great option if you have just one or two missing teeth that need to be dealt with.

Implant-Supported Bridges

Implant Supported Bridge

Bridge Vs. Implant

If you’re missing several teeth in a row (or a whole mouthful of them), dental implants can be combined with dental bridges to provide a solution. Implant-supported bridges use several implants to provide a sturdy foundation for a dental bridge, which is a row of crowns that have been fused together. Traditionally, bridges are attached to your existing teeth, but using implants both removes the need to damage your existing teeth in order to attach the bridge and makes for a sturdier, more durable hold.
